08:10rvvs89milkmann: You need to use iTunes to transfer songs to your iPod
08:11rvvs89milkmann: Also, some songs that you may have purchased through iTunes may be encrypted.
08:12rvvs89iirc they aren't doing this anymore, but I don't use iTunes so don't take my word for it

09:57milkmannwhat to use
10:00
10:00rvvs89Can you rephrase?
10:08milkmannfor transfering m4p to mp3
10:09rvvs89Right, M4P is an encrypted song from the iTunes store, you need to use the copy of iTunes that you used to download it originally to transfer it to the iPod in order to play it.
10:10rvvs89If you no longer have access to that copy of iTunes, tough luck I'm afraid.
10:11milkmannman that sucks
10:12milkmannso it cant be hacked
10:12TheSevenit's DRM. it always sucks.
10:19rvvs89Yep, that's what you get for buying DRM encumbered products.
10:20rvvs89You can apparently get around the DRM by burning the song to a CD and then ripping said CD, but still requires the original copy of iTunes from which you purchased the song.
10:20rvvs89s/but/but that/

17:55Conkerchenhi
17:56Conkerchencan anyone help me? ... i just messed up my ipod
18:00
18:13rvvs89Conkerchen: What's the problem?
18:13Conkercheni just installed the ipodlinux but it did not quite work
18:14Conkerchenafterwards, i formated the ipod and used itunes to reinstall the firmware
18:14Conkerchennow i cannot do anything
18:14Conkerchenthe ipod won't even turn on. no error message or anything, just black screen
18:15scorche|shConkerchen: which ipod?
18:15Conkerchen5g
18:15Conkerchen30gb
18:15scorche|shswitch the hold switch on then off...then hold menu + select for 30 seconds
18:16Conkerchenfor 30 seconds? i allready tried holding those buttons but not THAT long
18:16Conkerchenwait a sec, ill try that
18:19Conkerchenno it wont work
18:19Conkerchentried it 2 times, held them over one minute long
18:20rvvs89Is the screen actually black, or is it off?
18:20Conkerchenit is off
18:20scorche|shthen your ipod might be completely discharged...plug it in (preferably to a wall outlet) and leave it for potentially 24 hours
18:20Conkerchenalso if i connect it to computer it is not detected
18:20scorche|shwait...if you plug it in does the screen come on?
18:21Conkercheni also assumed that but it was half fully loaded, when the error occured. Also i loaded it for about an hour after that but nothing. It also doesnt show the battery loading screen when plugged in
18:22Conkerchenno it does not
18:22scorche|shwell, simply installing ipl or anything of the sort wont produce the behavior you are describing...the only possiblities for a "dead" screen and reset procedure/button combo not working is either hardware failure or complete battery discharge
18:23rvvs89When you were holding menu+select, was the iPod plugged in to some power source?
18:24scorche|shwell, there is one other possibility: you are doing something wrong
18:24Conkerchenwell, as i said is happend after i installed the original firmware. itunes said, the ipod would reboot. I waited, the ipod showed a loading bar but it did not complete. I pressed MENU and then it turned off. since then i could not get it back on
18:24rvvs89Ah, perhaps some problem occurred while it was being flashed
18:25Conkerchenitunes flashes the ipod when i do the firmwareupdate?
18:25Conkercheni didnt know that
18:25scorche|shoh...this was during an itunes flash?...you said it was when you installed ipl...
18:25scorche|shit does sometimes
18:25Conkerchenthats defently not what i wanted
18:25rvvs89Iirc only when you use the restore feature
18:26scorche|shrvvs89: really?....i thought it was only on some updates...
18:26Conkerchenso is there a way, to falsh it again so it will work?
18:26scorche|shConkerchen: if that indeed is the issue, then no
18:27scorche|shwell, not anything you can do at least
18:27rvvs89scorche|sh: You are probably correct
18:27Conkerchenwell thats great
18:27scorche|shrvvs89: flashing on each restore would be just plain silly
18:27Conkerchendo you think, i could blame itunes for this?
18:27scorche|shConkerchen: try my earlier suggestion and then re-evaluate the situation...
18:28TheSevenConkerchen: how far roughly did the status bar go before it locked up?
18:28TheSevenand did you just briefly press menu, or hold menu+select at that point?
18:28Conkerchenabout one quart i think
18:29TheSevenouch, that's in the middle of the boot loader.
18:29TheSevenso it just got stuck there?
18:29rvvs89scorche|sh: It would be, but I'm sure I've read some stories on the old iPodLinux forums of people who've interrupted a restore only to cause a partial flash.
18:29Conkerchentheseven: i think i only touched it but im not sure
18:29Conkerchenyes
18:29scorche|shrvvs89: "restoring" to an updated firmware, i would imagine
18:30scorche|shbut, i could be wrong
18:30rvvs89It's not exactly a well documented feature
18:30TheSevenwell, actually it's everything that rewrites that one field in the AUPD image to zero, so if it is doing a complete restore with a fubar'd firmware partition, it will probably flash
18:31TheSeventhese old ipods don't even have a bootrom, right?
18:31rvvs89Right, it's all on disk.
18:31rvvs89Except for the flash
18:32rvvs89Conkerchen: If it's still under warranty, this is covered.
18:32Conkerchenlol
18:32Conkerchenits 5g
18:32Conkerchenabout 3 years old i think
18:32rvvs89Emphasis on if
18:32Conkerchenwarranty lasts 1 year
18:32TheSevenso they booted directly off a parallel NOR flash?
18:32TheSevenoh, i love the new ones which have far more reliable fallback mechanisms
18:33rvvs89Yeah, but Apple also sells extended warranties for iPods
18:33rvvs89TheSeven: What kinds of mechanisms?
18:34TheSevena mask rom on the soc itself containing a USB DFU bootrom
18:34rvvs89Oh, that is pretty handy
18:34TheSevensince the classic and nano 3g these things are 100% unbrickable
18:34rvvs89Ah, so that's what was being activated when the firmware was rubbish
18:35TheSeventhe nano 2g could theoretically be semi-bricked into a state where one would need to open it and short 2 pcb pads to enter a recovery mode
18:36TheSevenhowever, we haven't managed to break one to a degree that would have needed this yet
18:36rvvs89I'm surprised it took them so many generations to reach that point.
18:37TheSevenif the nano2g has a bad flash checksum it will automatically enter bootrom DFU, but if it has a good checksum on a bad flash, it'll need to be opened
18:37TheSevenon the later ones, you can enter an absolutely bullet-proof DFU mode by resetting it twice in a row
18:38TheSeven(and starting with the nano 4g, they have dropped the nor flash entirely and boot directly off nand)
18:39TheSevenConkerchen: if you want to fix it, the easiest way will probably be a mainboard swap :-/
18:39Conkerchen-.-
18:45Conkercheni'm actually thinking that itunes could be liable for this. at least they did not warn the user, that the ipod would be flashed and that a failing flash might cause the ipod to be absolutely unusable.

21:13Doc^DonkeyHello !
21:14Doc^Donkeyi have an interresting question for you guys
21:14Doc^Donkeyheres how it goes
21:15Doc^Donkeyi use a nice sony walkman mp3player wich, i fear, is limiting me with its 4gb of songs i can bring along, and i think i'm gonna be looking for a replacement by the time christmas gets by
21:16Doc^Donkeyone thing i realy dont like about that mp3player (and maybe most of them) is the fact i cant actualy queue songs to be next to be played
21:17Doc^Donkeyi was wondering is an ipod with linux as a OS would allow me to do so or to tweak it so it would work
