Ubuntu - Hardy Heron
okay so i've tried to run the ipodpatcher... couldn't find my ipod
my ipod is located at dev/sdc1
results of sudo cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Host: scsi4 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Apple Model: iPod Rev: 1.62
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00

i can access my ipod just fine.. open the folder wonderfully and even rthmbox see's it and can load it
please treat me like a new person.. i need my directions spelled out for me

i was trying to follow http://mikesubuntu.blogspot.com/2007/10/how-to-install-rockbox-and-extras-on.html

because its SIMPLE.. so if you can walk me thru.. anything it doesn't have to be mike's.. but write it in a way i can understand like his.. that would be great because all of my efforts have failed.. and i have found no help in the irc channel.. people are listed there.. but NOONE talks or responds to you

here is the error report from what i tried with mike's walkthru
" sudo ./installer.sh dev/sdc1

Try installing using Zeroslackr. Its fast easy and has a lot of features. Its basically a custom podzilla2 that lets you launch a lot of apps.

like i said before.. it still says in ipodpatcher that the ipod cannot be found.. and its not a permission issue.. i have full priveledges.. HOW do i make either of what i'm trying to run.. SEE the ipod.. it is supported AND i do have full priveledges

"Q: When I run the "patch" script I am told by iPod patcher that my iPod cannot be found when my iPod is clearly connected. Whats up with that?
A: If ipodpatcher says your iPod isn't connected but it is, you may not have full admin access; find a computer in which you do have admin access. If you have such privileges, iTunes is closed and your iPod shows up as a drive, it is possible that your iPod is not supported by iPodLinux. See the Generations page.

Put your ipod in disk mode. Go to itunes, click on your ipod, then tick disk mode, then click apply. Now it should work!

Instead of following that tutorial why not try an installer like the official ipodlinux installer:
http://ipodlinux.org/Installer

well A the installer page says specifically that i can't use it for my ipod.. and B.. that STILL doesn't solve the problem of nothing seeing my ipod!!

i've stated this a few times now.. the ipodpatcher does NOT find my ipod.. and it has to do with where its located.. if someone could kindly answer my direct question of HOW to get these programs to SEEE my ipod.. my problems with ALL the installers would resolve

and c: i;m using the installer i've found not because anything is superior.. but BECAUSE IT HAS A COHERANT WALKTHRU.. not because i care about which one to use..

so please.. answer my first question on what script to run in terminal to know what partition the ipod is on... and if it is still /dev/sdc1 what do i actually type.. and what do i edit so that it will run???

Did you mount your iPod anywhere such that you can access it as a removable drive? (i.e. mount to /mnt/ipod) As far as I remember, most/all Ubuntu flavours should auto-mount your iPod to somewhere in /mnt though the 5.5Gs may be an exception due to their weird cylinders (or so I've read). Make sure to look through Ubuntu forums to see how other people mount their iPods. If your iPod is mounted as a removable drive and you have root permissions, ipodpatcher should detect it.

zowki: Please try to better understand the poster's positions first before trying to help. iTunes does not even exist on Linux. Unless you're familiar with Linux-Windows differences, please make sure every time that your suggestions are applicable. On a side note, ZeroSlackr is not just a custom podzilla2; ZeroLauncher is. ZeroSlackr is basically a custom, complete iPodLinux installation.

hmmm no i just plugged it in and it auto mounted.. but i don't know about /mnt i ran
sudo cat /proc/scsi/scsi
and got the result of:

Host: scsi4 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Apple Model: iPod Rev: 1.62
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00

and when i open
system>administrator>system monitor> file systems
and found it located here:
/dev/sdc1

is there an other way to look?

Edit: (Please try not to double post. Thanks.)
hmmm well i just plugged it in again.. it seems to be located in /media like my other external HD... but there is nothing in mnt (i looked using the folders)

do i really need to find a windows machine and use itunes to put it into disk mode.. is this truly my whole problem?? if so is there possibly another way to put it into disk mode with linux instead?? or mabye i need to unmount it and re-mount it with a terminal command for it to go properly? i'm trying really hard to be smart and think of all angles.. but i'm still too new at linux to be a genius yet. i'm comfy enough with terminal that i can run some commands without a guide like sudo and apt-get but the rest i use step by step guides... and like i said before.. i don't HAVE to use mike's guide.. i just am because i could understand his walkthru... the install page seemed to be a bit over my head and i was unsure of commands. it was generalized and assumed i knew what the heck i was doing LOL

http://www.ubuntux.org/how-to-use-an-ipod-with-ubuntu
If GTKPod can detect it, so should apps like ipodpatcher unless it doesn't have the permissions set (do "chmod ugo+rwx" on the ipodpatcher binary just in case though I'm not sure if it'll make a difference). If Gnome/KDE doesn't auto-mount your iPod and GTKPod doesn't detect it, follow the instructions on the above link. If it is detected by GTKPod but not accessible to ipodpatcher, there is probably permissions issues. Otherwise, I have no idea (and don't use Linux all that often to be able to help much more).

okay the only thing left is permissions.. HOWEVER i think its a big fat liar.. everything EXCEPT the ipod patcher detects it.. AND i can open all the files i want.. AND write all the file i want.. i EVEN logged in AS ROOT and it still wouldn't see it... what the heck else can i do to make the ipod permission issue go away.. this is my computer i have all access???

http://ftp.sh.cvut.cz/MIRRORS/slax/SLAX-5.x/slax-5.1.8.1.iso
Download and try a SLAX 5 LiveCD. Slax's KDE auto-mounts my iPod and ipodpatcher works on my iPod there (provide you set the permissions for the ipodpatcher binary). If Slax doesn't work, you'll have to either try reformatting your iPod using a Windows iTunes (find a friend with one) or hope that someone else more knowledgeable can help you.

does the problem really have to do with my flavor of linux? i'm using ubuntu hardy heron.. i'm not opposed to trying a new flavor i mean.. especially not just by a liveCD.. i'm not intimidated by it all.. just new and trying to wrap my head around things

sudo ./ipodpatcher

even if you have "all permissions" you still have to do sudo
